Four Days Later, Back to Normal
Four days after the big celebrations, things are pretty much back to normal in Addis. With the exceptions of the droopy, wet, Millennium banners, now looking like Christmas lights in February, things are as they were. For me it's a repeat of the Millennium in the US: on January third, it was back to work and all normal.
The reports in the paper are that the millennium was a big success, at least in the hearts and minds of the local citizens. There was a lot of happy, peaceful celebrating with no unnecessary police intervention.
Inflation-related data: sheep prices were at an all-time high in Addis, bringing as much as ETB 760 for a nice fat sheep. Hens brought as much as ETB 40, another all-time high. Still, judging by the number of sheep heads on the roadside during my dog-walks the last two days, at least in Bole the high price didn't dampen sheep sales. But if the millennium came on a fasting day (Wednesday) who was eating all that sheep meat?
hehehe happy millennium and the best is yet to come in Ethiopia!
Thanks Marc for your blogs.
