Thats a heart sinking feeling to come out to see that in the morning. I know the feeling all too well!

And this is why A) I love having a garage parking spot and b) the police's response is why I do not live in DC.

Yep, one of the (many) reasons I don't have a car.

I had that happened to me back in 2000. I was devastated, and I started paying to park in the parking garage. Damn, thieves.

This is one of my reasons for not buying a house in D.C., that and the terrible schools. You know you can have your cake and eat it too, if you live in MD or VA, you can live about 20-30 min. to down town DC and park your car infront of your house without worrying about it being broken into.

I'm sorry about your loss. I can oly imagine how violated you must feel.
I know you were not wanting to hear the police suggestion. Unfortunately, it is the simplest way to deter vandalism like this.
Here are a few other tips:
1- If you must leave items in the car, drape a sweater or jacket over them. Remember, thieves look for an easy target. If they don't see what they are looking for they will move on to the next car.
2- Park under a street light.
3- Mark all of your items with an ultra violate pen in case they show up later you could prove they were yours.
4- Data dots are also getting popular. These use nano technology to mark your items for easy claiming later.
5- Tint your windows to the maximum allowed by law.
It basically comes down to this... Don't make yourself an easy target.
I hope this helps

This happened to my sister last year. Her window was smashed, and her laptop was stolen.
Research is key in getting a proper car insurance quote.
